MadCap's Game Reviews - "The Outer Worlds: Peril on Gorgon"

Well, goodness me! Two game reviews after a year long hiatus from them? Yeah, don't celebrate too hard, I probably have one more of these in me for a bit before game reviewer me gets put back into hibernation for a while.

Try not to weep.

Also, Starfield things have contributed to me twisting my interests back to the world of sci-fi, so The Outer Worlds provided a temporary itch to that particular scratch. I once more got to step into the leather boots of Captain Alex Hawthorne - that is, roguish, smart-mouthed, eye patch-wearing Emmett. Last we saw Emmett, he had become a renowned Inspector and had journeyed to and fro across Eridanos to solve a murder mystery that bled over into a massive conspiracy involving... well, spoiler warning, but... something something, brain-eating slugs.

Needless to say, Emmett was quite happy to get that dealt with and then head back with his crew to the Unreliable to partake in more wacky hijinks across the stars.

One such set of hijinks occurred involving a severed arm and a mysterious message that brought our good captain and his crew into the company on one Minnie Ambrose, the daughter of renowned scientist Olivia Ambrose. Originally working for the company Spacer's Choice, Olivia had developed a drug to boost the colonists (essentially, a caffeine shot on steroids - with no steroids). However the project, set on an asteroid called Gorgon, was mysteriously cancelled. Now, years later, Minnie wants to get her mother's journal and clear her family's name. However, as the title of the DLC suggests, there is indeed peril on Gorgon. Powerful and terrible creatures roam across the rocky terrain, and there was so very, very many of the berserking Marauders that are seen in a few places in the base game running around...

Needless to say, like with Murder on Eridanos, there is definitely more going on here than a simple retrieval mission. It's not a bad plot, though some of the beats of it you can see coming from a mile away even if you don't have the skill to hack some of the terminals for backstory details.

Other than that, not too much really to talk about. It's a solid DLC - nothing super mind blowing or grandiose - and it was fun to step back into the shoes of the roguish space captain before he went off to go save Professor Welles from the Board and saved the colony from further decimation at their hands.

If I have to criticize one thing about it, I will say I wish there'd been a little more interaction with the companions. They do occasionally comment on things and you can ask them about the goings on during the adventure, but it doesn't really have the depth or complexity you can get from the base game or even Eridanos. Maybe they just didn't have time to add more, maybe I missed something, I'm not sure.

That, however, doesn't detract from what was another solid adventure of the crew of the Unreliable... unfortunately, likely their last adventure given the end of game slideshow we get at the end of the game.

...what's that? The announcement teaser came out two years ago for a sequel?

...well, that's me a day late and a dollar short again!

The Outer Worlds: Peril on Gorgon is brought to us by Obsidian for Xbox One and Playstation 4.
