MadCap's Trailer Reactions - "Deadpool 2"

Well. Damn.

Also, the trailer is obviously explicit to start - but it's Deadpool so you really have no excuse for expecting it to be otherwise. Actual spoilers start below the cut, if you haven't already seen the trailer yourself.

From the looks of it, we have several returning faces from the first Deadpool such as the Merc with a Mouth himself (Ryan Reynolds), his girlfriend Vanessa (Morena Baccarin), Weasel (TJ Miller), Blind Al (Leslie Uggams), Dopinder (Karan Sori), Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand), and Colossus (Stefan Kapičić). They all make an appearance in the trailer.

We also get the appearances of Cable (Josh Brolin) and Domino (Zazie Beetz).

First things first - damn is it a good time to be Josh Brolin right now, or what? First he was stuck with the awful Jonah Hex and the gods of comic book films decided to smile on him and give him not one, but two major blockbusters this year. I honestly think he'll do a pretty good job, even if I was gunning to see Michael Biehn in the role. Being a freedom fighter sent back from the future to right what once went wrong seems to just fit him for some, strange reason...can't think why.

And then, we come to Domino...and her actress Zazie Beetz. Let me go ahead and get this out of the way now, I don't care about the casting in the least. But.

She.

Doesn't.

Look.

Like.

Domino.

And no, this isn't a dig at her race. This is a dig at the fact that the people making the film didn't seem to think doing anything to make her even vaguely look like her comic counterpart besides sticking a piece of white crud around her eye - swapping the color aesthetic from her comic appearance, by the way - and putting her in tight leather was going to cut the mustard.

I'm not one of those crazy people that believes that there's a wide-spread media campaign to change beloved characters for the sake of "diversity", but it's pretty much nigh-impossible to deny them that when you really are doing absolutely nothing to make it seem like that isn't what you're doing.

And then going out of your way to call people who call you out on it racist or sexist.

Looking at you, Rian Johnson and JJ Abrams!

That being said, I have never seen anything that Zazie Beetz has been in, so who knows? Maybe she will absolutely blow everyone away and we'll see why the filmmakers decided that she needed to be cast. I'll keep an open mind...for now.

We also get the appearance of a few other characters that seem like they'll be involved in the newly-formed X-Force - one of them played by Terry Crews, who should have made the jump into superhero films long ago, so it's nice to see him finally making it.

It seems that Cable has made his way back from the future to kill off one particular mutant (Julian Dennison), and finds that Deadpool stands in his way. Of course, with Cable spouting off future tech out the wazoo, he can't do it alone and so recruits friends old and new to, as Wade puts it "get our fuck on" and stop him.

Will he succeed? Will Weasel's prediction in the first film come true and Deadpool become a franchise? It certainly seems that it will, even though FOX is set to be swallowed up by the monster that is Disney. That being said, we'll have to wait until May 18th one way or another.

As for me? I'm cautiously optimistic. The trailer shows the same kind of humor and level of gore that we've come to expect from Deadpool, so it's entirely possible that it'll be good. Will it be on the same level as the first one? Most likely not, but that film was the very definition of lightning in a bottle - even the screw ups and budget cuts in the film were worked in to make it a masterpiece - this will probably still be, if nothing else, quite enjoyable and Ryan Reynolds seems to have lost none of his edge as everyone's favorite Pool Guy, which gives me some hope.

It's also possible that it'll suck. After all, reshoots for Suicide Squad really didn't do it any favors after what we've seen of that.

Deadpool 2 is set for release from Marvel and FOX on May 28, 2018.
