MadCap's Comic Reviews - "Angel" #7: Time and Tide, Part Three

We now return to our Voyage of the Damned already in progress. When we last left our dynamic duo, Angel and Illyria, they were on a pirate boat in the past where Angelus and Darla had been sent - rather like Team Rocket - blasting off again. While Angel feared for future continuity, he and the depowered Elder God had greater worries, primarily the fact that they were on a boat that was not only under siege by pirates, but had a pest problem that was rapidly getting worse.

The beetle from last issue has replicated many times over by now, infecting a great many of the crew. There isn't as much to note as far as storyline goes in this one, mostly detailing Angel and Fred/Illyria managing to escape from the ship after Illyria sets fire to it in the hopes of sinking it and restoring the timeline to its proper place: namely a world that hasn't been overrun by forehead-stabbing, zombie beetles.

Honestly, the best timeline in my opinion.

And the comic ends on a rather frightening image of Angel and Fred in a life boat...surrounded by the forehead-stabbed zombies.

Oops.

With luck, however, Angelus and Darla managed to escape. As established in a previous issue, Angel's memories have been altered by their actions. Such as it was now with him knowing that Angelus and Darla simply turned the boat over to avoid the oncoming sunlight. Again, most of the same beats can be played out here. The artwork is good, the story is still very gripping and its nice to have some action after a few issues that were more exposition heavy. And while I'm a bit peeved that we haven't gotten more Angel vs. Angelus fighting, the actual TV show technically already did that (and did it in one of my favorite episodes of the series), so I'm not going to ding them as much as I did...y'know...

That other comic.

With part three out of the way, we have a good lead in for part four, with the horror ramped up even further. Now, Angel and Fred are not only trapped on a boat, but on a boat with much more limited space while in the middle of the ocean and zombies zeroing in on their position. How are they going to get out of this one?

Find out next week, when we enter Part Four of Time and Tide, and come to the conclusion of this storyline...

Angel is currently published by Dark Horse Comics.
