"Anniversary Dinner" is definitely an episode that is just that in a nutshell. However, it's even more chilling in the fact that it has no supernatural or science fiction elements whatsoever. It's a story that is so grounded in reality that it could be happening in your neck of the woods...or just down a few old country back roads.
It all begins with an elderly couple about to celebrate their twenty-fifth anniversary. The wife, Elinor, laments to her husband, Henry, that they're old and their children are all gone, saying they added so much special to their anniversaries. A sadness, I'm sure, that couples have once they've been happily married for so long.
A pair of hikers comes by asking for directions. The young man, Mark, is quite rude, but the young woman, Sybil, is rather polite...and is welcomed back by Elinor any time. Elinor even remarks, after they've left, that Sybil reminds her of one of their children. She hopes that she comes back...and indeed, Sybil does, welcomed with open arms after Mark left her behind. They offer her a shower...food...and seem like such a lovely couple, letting her enjoy their hot tub and even inviting her to stay with them for a while.
...that is, after Elinor learns that Sybil hasn't seen her family in two years.
Yeah, I'm not going to sugar coat it...you know exactly what's going on here. Someone very, very close to her is about to be quite the banquet for the couple celebrating their silver anniversary...yes, very, very close to her indeed.
This episode sticks out very strongly in my mind, largely due to the fact that THIS IS A REAL THING THAT COULD POSSIBLY HAPPEN IN REAL LIFE!
No, I'm serious. This episode of Tales from the Darkside has no supernatural or science fiction elements. At all. It is literally just a tale of humans being...well, as I said before, really, really fucked up. It's absolutely chilling and the delivery is actually really, really astounding. Even with the old couple dropping hints as to their true intentions, largely keeping a tone of light-hearted bickering between the pair of them...and it's just...it still chills me every time I watch it.
So, readers...take care when you're on a country back road, and enjoy the hospitality of that sweet old couple. They may just be celebrating their silver anniversary...and you might be just too delicious to pass up.
Then again, who knows? You might just want to take the chance. After all, there ain't no party like a Donner party!!!!
