What If...Sam Winchester killed John Winchester? (Part 4)

Last time we looked into a world where Sam Winchester had killed Azazel with the Colt during the events of Devil's Trap, we came to the end of the first part of the Season 2 finale. As in the original timeline, even without Azazel running the show, the psychic children were gathered up for a battle royale by Lilith.  This time, Ansem was the one who took home the gold by killing off the other kids, including Sam.

We pick up with them just after...

As in the OT, Dean is in emotional freefall. Bobby attempts to console him and Dean is having none of it, refusing to let Sam be buried or burned. When Bobby leaves, Dean collapses completely and does his monologue to Sam - again, as in the OT.

Elsewhere, Lilith and Ansem emerge elsewhere. She explains that Ansem is now the General of her Armies, but that they'll need the Colt as it serves as the key she needs to open the Gate. When asked how they can get it, Lilith tells Ansem that she'll have the Winchesters bring it to her.

Dean makes his deal as in the OT with the same set of circumstances - one year and he goes to Hell, no ifs ands or buts. Sam is resurrected with seemingly no issue, his wound from Ansem's scythe completely healed. Bobby gives Dean Hell for what he's done, but Dean does get him to agree to keep it quiet. Ellen arrives and they go through the same attempt to prove or disprove that she's a demon before she gets involved in the hunt. Jo also shows up, having been called in by Bobby and wanting to help out to avenge Ash.

She and Sam have a bit of a complicated moment. While she does understand that it was Meg who shot him rather than Sam, she's still more than a little wary of him and it's clear that any spark they had is clearly gone from her end. Sam is.. conflicted, but soon is distracted as Ellen brings out what Ash told her to get from the safe in the Roadhouse, the map that will eventually lead them to the cemetery with the Devil's Gate. They do some research into it, finding what they did in the OT - Samuel Colt had those railroads built around that one cemetery in the exact center. They also find a small piece of information: whatever is in there, it needs the Colt... and the Colt can finish whatever it is for good.

There's some debate about whether they should even pursue this, Sam thinking that it seems a little bit too convenient and that they may be walking into a trap. Dean, however, is emboldened by his deal and wants to take down as many of the evil sons of bitches as he can if it is a trap. Eventually, the plan is made to head out there and deal with the problem.

Ansem has arrived at the cemetery and, as Jake was in the OT, he gets surrounded by the hunter team. Unfortunately for them, he's even more jumped up on the demon blood than Jake was and he puts Ellen, Jo, and even Bobby into a hostage situation to get the Colt from Sam and Dean. Dean relents and gives it, Ansem putting the Colt into the door and starting to unlock it... only for Sam to score a headshot on the man, sending him falling to the ground. As Dean moves forward to stop him, Sam coldly fires three more shots into Ansem's skull, cutting off his blood-soaked, gargled begging for his life.

The gate is opened and the demons are released onto the Earth. Bobby, Jo, Ellen, and Sam rush to close the Gate while Dean has retrieved the Colt and turns to face Lilith, who telekinetically throws him against a tombstone. Like Azazel, she taunts him about his deal and puts the thought into his head that Sam might not be Sam anymore. Unlike in the original timeline, John isn't in Hell to crawl out and save Dean, but Sam is. He tackles Lilith as she's preparing to kill Dean, breaking her concentration. She uses her superior strength to pin Sam and mock him, telling him that he has no idea what's coming... and then escapes from her meatsuit as black smoke when she hears Dean click back the hammer of the Colt.

The Devil's Gate gets closed up once more and we get the wrap up for our hunters. Dean has to come clean about his deal and Sam commits to saving him from Hell. Bobby informs the boys that a lot of demons got out and the war has just begun. Unlike in the OT, however, we don't end on Dean and Sam standing in triumph over the trunk of the Impala. Instead, we cut away to a warehouse in an undisclosed location. Lilith has found a new host and is speaking to a man in a crisp suit. He mentions the power necessary to go back in time and alter the book that would one day be owned by Bobby Singer. She tells him that, while things didn't go exactly to plan, they are still on track - Dean Winchester made the deal and will be going to Hell within the year. The man tells her that, this being the case, they have nothing to say until the time comes.

Lilith lightly teases Raphael for his dour attitude, a lightning strike nearby illuminating the shadow of his wings against the far wall before he vanishes.

...and that's where we're leaving Season 2 in this universe. The boys still have the Colt, still have one bullet remaining, and it looks like things are still on track for the Apocalypse to happen. When we return, we'll be getting into Season 3 and see what has changed with the pieces on the board in a very different formation... in ways that may not yet be apparent.

Be there!
