Fallout is a series that you know that I’m a big fan of and it is not
without irony that I say I really like the latest addition to the
Fallout family, the DLC Old World Blues. It has a direct contrast to
the last two – Dead Money and Honest Hearts – while still showing
Fallout’s themes at its best. The feel of the American 1950s, the
blinding optimism and arrogance of the post-War America being turned on
its head is done again, but this time in an entirely different way.
With Science!
Once again it was time to step into the leather boots of Reese, my gun-wielding, lockpicking, wise-cracking Lady Killer of a Courier. This time Reese found himself picking up a strange transmission on his Pip Boy and journeyed to the Mojave Drive-In and found the ground to have been impacted with a crater now filled with satellite. Seeing the strange projection on the viewscreen above, Reese decided to examine the strange object that had crashed into the Mojave and found himself waking up moments later with no memories of the past few hours and feeling that much heavier. A cursory examination of himself found him in a completely different place than the Mojave Drive In and a quick trip through a door found him in the presence of several brains in jars.
The brains floating around in their jars with their eye screens staring at Reese with curiosity explained that his heart, brain, and spine had been removed, making this the Wizard of Oz by way of Mad Max. In order to get them back, the brains – apparently former human scientists in this installation “the Big Empty” – want me to go and assassinate another one of their comrades who has a bizarre fixation with robot scorpions. And to make matters worse, Scorpion Man has my brain due to the other brains apparently having completely stopped giving a damn.
…and so much for the plot overview. Now, this is where the reviewer would normally talk about the gameplay but being that this is DLC, you already know how New Vegas runs if you’re going to go buy it. The graphics run the same as the rest of the game, just new eye candy to gawk at while we wait for Lonesome Road to come out…hopefully not a month later than it was announced for? Hint hint, Bethesda Softworks! Regardless, Old World Blues gives a neat area to explore and plenty of wonderful secrets to explore. The big cheeses will, of course, discourage the player exploration which is a clear indicator that it should be done. For those that don’t find the main story interesting while likely find the exploration exciting and, like I said, wonderful secrets abound.
All in all, ten out of ten. Now…Lonesome Road! Now, please!!!
Old World Blues is now available from download from Bethesda Softworks and Obsidian Entertainment on Xbox Live and Playstation Network.
