MadCap's Trailer Reactions - "Indiana Jones: The Game" (Bethesda)

Someone get me a table to flip!

…okay, okay, let me regain my composure. As we continue to wait for Elder Scrolls VI, the long-awaited day that is apparently taking longer than the development cycles of both Oblivion and Skyrim, it seems that Bethesda had concocted yet another distraction.

This time, however, the distraction actually has the potential to be good. Plus, I won't be able to shriek my usual complaint of MAKE ANOTHER GAME, TODD!

. . .because Todd Howard, the extraordinary mad lad that he is, has given us something of pure and simple joy. Will this game be but a shadowy reflection of something far grander? Bethesda and Machine Games are teaming up again after Wolfenstein to bring us a new adventure about the man, the myth, the legend - Indiana Jones.

Of course, the double-edged sword of my excitement here is that this is merely a teaser trailer, which I'm expressed my feelings about before. This is particularly apt for video game trailers, mostly since video games are an interactive medium and simply telling me that something is going to exist isn't really enough to whet my appetite in most circumstances. Let's be real for a moment, the only reason I am so excited is that it's an Indiana Jones game (one of which I've covered before), and the trailer makes that as clear as an air horn blaring out into the ears of everyone in the world.

We get the hat, we get the whip, and we see many of the hallmarks of Indy's work as an archaeologist such as books for research, maps, and other gear such as compasses. It's all very well-presented, with the logos of the various companies involved put over various objects on the table as the camera passes over them, ending with a hand picking up the iconic hat and revealing the equally iconic whip under it. Pure poetry, and probably the only reason I'm psyched about this game.

Not really sure on anything about the plot or other details of that nature. A ticket for an overnight flight to Rome is shown, but nothing else seems to stick out with any distinction among the objects in the teaser, although admittedly I didn't go over everything with the fine toothed comb. After all, what do I look like? An archaeologist?

In all seriousness, I'm cautiously psyched about what is coming. I've been burned before, as we all have, by the teaser trailer and it's capricious lack of useful information. For an announcement trailer, though, this does its job well. Let's just hope the game is up to the snuff of its pedigree.

Also, I really ought to actually review the Indiana Jones films at some point in the future. I think 2021 is going to see some of that.

…also games, because that was at one point what this blog was about.

Oh, and this doesn't get you off the hook, Todd. Elder Scrolls VI. Get on it.

The yet untitled Indiana Jones game has been announced, to be developed by Bethesda Softworks, Machine Games, and Lucasfilm Games for some point in the near future.
